After the recent selection of his painting, Black Meriah, by the Saatchi Online Gallery UK, artist
Schalk van der Merwe is spreading his wings and unique style into Africa. His recent work, Amnesia,
was sold to a buyer from Nairobi, Kenya. Commisioned by Nel Luyendyk, owner and curator of
The Ghuba Gallery, the piece attracted a lot of attention, before being scooped up by the Narobi buyer.
Schalk’s unique bold style of portraits, is constantly evolving. “ I don’t believe that creativity should be held hostage to expectations”, says Schalk. “Every day, every canvas is the start of a new story. All I have to do is surrender control and let the canvas reveal the work to me. There always seems to be a plan at the beginning of each piece, fortunately I don’t know what it is. When the ideas speak to me, all I have to do is listen.”
A selection of his work can be viewed at The Ghuba Gallery in Hout Bay.
