SVDM'S NAME IN LIGHTS IN MEXICO CITY
As an artists Schalk is always looking for ways to expand his global footprint. This sometimes means stepping outside of the normal ways of exposure. In this case... a theater audience.
Schalk was approached by two Mexican actors after seeing his work on Instagram, @svandermerwe. They were so impressed by the raw, visceral nature of his portraits, that they had to request the usage of one of his images. The play "After the Silence" is a contemporary version of a Polish play. Directors Inés De Tavira and Alexandro Guererro were absolutely convinced that Schalk's work was perfect for the poster promoting this theatrical adaptation.
"We saw his work on Instagram and immediately knew we had to get his permission and blessing in using his artwork for the poster. The intensity of his work captured the essence of what were trying to do with the play. His work captured the madness and solitude that the play is all about. Luckily for us he was very accommodating and after some email correspondence we had his approval to use his artwork." says Alex.
"I'm always open to opportunities and sometimes they come from the most unlikely places. I honestly didn't see this one coming, but was thrilled that my work fitted into their creative vision," says van der Merwe.
The play runs from August to October 2017 at the Colonia Condesa in Mexico City.
